Oaklands' annual punk festival, Mosswood Meltdown took place as usual on the first weekend of July. The headliners on Saturday July 6th were the B-52s. Before the B-52s were Red Kross, Hunx and the Punx, Peaches Christ, Pansy Division and more festivities including an x rated drag contest judged by none other than John Waters.

All seemed to be having fun and the music was good and 'interesting'. Many bands I hadn't heard of played over the two days. Red Kross was probably my fave new band of the event. but I must say, the B-52s were awesome as usual. They played a great set with original members, Fred, Cindy and Kate giving it their best. Its great to see the three main band members are still together and playing strong. Many older bands today have mostly new members. And if there is one original member they are able to go by the original band name. Not this band...the original B-52s are still going and giving it their all to their long term fans and new B-52s lovers as well. Their set included all their hits, "Rock Lobster", "Private Idaho", "Lava", "Planet Claire", "Loveshack" and was a great end to a very hot Saturday in Oakland. As usual John Waters was his usual epic emcee of the weekend.

The weekend festival was very colorful. Attendees dress in the most colorful manner in very original fashion and some of the best people watching can be had at this event. They truly let their 'freak flag fly'...in all ways. I love the freedom feel of this event. If you like punk and events that are a tad weird - Mosswood Meltdown may be a fun, out of the ordinary event for your mid summer next year. Everyone is friendly and the word that has been used most about it is 'chill'. And chill it was.
